This trip report covers 9 weeks in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, July 23 to October 1, 2012. Though I read several trip reports prior to my departure, planning was often done (pardon the pun) on-the-fly with hotels booked last minute. I am an amateur birder, and though have birded the Malay Peninsula and the Philippines; this was my first excursion to Borneo. Some bird complexes required a lot of work on my part, and some I never felt confident in calling; they are omitted. Of the 280 species seen, playback was used sparingly and as noted. This report is organized into sections: General Information about birding in Sabah, Hotels and Logistics, and Bird Notes where species annotations are given. Maps and the bird list are on separate pages.
I was joined in part by bird guide CK Leong, and other Sabah birders to which I am very grateful. The hospitality and generosity of the birders I met in Malaysian Borneo was beyond measure.
Locations visited include: Kota Kinabalu (KK), Mt Kinabalu, Poring, Crocker Range National Park, Sepilok Forest Reserve, Sakau and Billit on the Kinabatangan River, Tabin Wildlife Reserve, Sipadan and Pom Pom Islands, Tawau Hills Park, and Tinagat Beach near Tawau.
